Main Event(s) - Maurice "Termite" Watkins vs. Juan Hidalgo
Interesting South Florida matchup between two up and coming young undefeated Lightweights of the era. Watkins would win a 10 round decision to keep his undefeated streak going.
Maurice "Termite" Watkins - Fascinating Lightweight Contender out of Houston, Texas. A 3-Time Houston Golden Gloves Champion and a National Golden Gloves Champion at Featherweight in 1973. Turned pro the next year and won his 1st 26 bouts. Never won a World Title but gave many World Champions and Top Fighters all they could handle, including bouts against Howard Davis Jr., Alfredo Escalera and a World Title opportunity against Saoul Mamby in 1980.
He would later go on to other business ventures and serve as a boxing coach and trainer in the local Houston area. In an interesting twist of fate he was recruited by the U.S. Government to serve as a Boxing Coach for the 2004 Iraqi Olympic Boxing Team as part of the rebuilding of the country from the Iraq/U.S. conflict. Against all odds one of his boxers was able to qualify for the Olympic Games. This has become the subject of a book and a movie that has been in various stages of pre-production.
Juan Hidalgo - Lost this bout, and would go on to become a gatekeeper type in the Lightweight and Welterweight divisions. Some of his other opponents included: Adolfo Viruet, Luis Resto, Clauzelle Longmire and Marlon Starling.
